Dear Pamela,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I was one of the top ten stem students at John Bowne High School in Flushing. I have come to the US as a non-immigrant from India, and consequently found my path to the City College of New York. I am majoring in computer science as an undergraduate. My dream to get into the computer field was not novel. Computers were not so ubiquitous during my childhood in India; so every time I have had the chance to have contact with it, I was exhilarated and inquisitive about how computers can possibly do these tasks. As the saying goes, “there’s no holding back an inquisitive mind”. Soon, I found myself taking computer science classes whenever I could, leading me to the Groove School of Engineering.

The greatest challenge for me would be settling into the new environment coming from India to New York, US. Not only people, but the whole educational environment was completely novel from what I have experienced. It was daunting at first to think if I could accustomed to this new ambiance, but now I can proudly say I am almost a New Yorker. We’re indeed cut from the same cloth; even with the huge cultural differences, it just took me to break one barrier of language and master the English language to get closer to New Yorker than anything could possibly do. The cultural diversity of New York took me in with great hospitality. My English and conversational skills, now, are not ace but give me good leverage over most of my conversations. Similarly, my education from India had given me leverage over the high school allowing me to be top ten stem students for three years in a row.

I dream myself a future to be with a software engineering job fluent in computer languages like C/C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and so on. This is the way my pursued major fits into my professional goal. The field of machine learning is very daunting to look deep into. Machine learning is a very daunting subject even for many software engineers due to its hard-to-use tools with requirements of advanced math, statistics, and probability. This is one of the engineering challenges that I would like to face while going forward with my journey in computer science. Other than that, catching up to new programming languages and keeping oneself up to date, and persistently finishing the workload of programming are a few other challenges that I will face and would definitely want to overcome.

Sincerely,

Sri Tarun Gulumuru
